APPROACH TO COACHING
Today’s business environment is demanding and rapidly changing. There is more responsibility and
pressure to achieve results quickly and at lower cost with limited resources. Most leaders have
limited opportunity to devote time and energy to their own development. I experienced this
firsthand in my own roles and hear from my clients regularly that the responsibility to oversee the
day-to-day needs of their team and business overshadow their ability to step back and reflect on the
bigger picture.
The primary development needs of senior and executive leaders are the ability to communicate more
skillfully and the capacity to hold more complexity because of their position in the organization.
Skillful communication is needed to build trust, inspire teams and coordinate action towards a
shared vision. For these reasons, my approach to working with executives and their teams is integral
and developmental. An integral approach leaves nothing out in reference to the client or their world.
The whole person and their unique gifts are seen, acknowledged and appreciated throughout the
process. An integral approach also draws from many disciplines and traditions for the sake of a
more complete and true understanding of the client. I integrate various coaching and assessment
models like the Enneagram and somatic or embodied practices into customized leadership
development plans to support my clients’ development.
A developmental approach to coaching shifts the way the client makes meaning of and engages with
the world, which can open up new possibilities for relationship, vision, strategy, and execution. I
find that this supports long-term change with clients. As my clients deepen in their development,
they
• report being able to respond to situations that were previously stressful with more skill and
ease
• notice a greater sense of empathy and appreciation for their team members, thus deepening
trust and relationships
• have more access to creative and innovative strategies to meet and exceed their goals
My intent in coaching clients is to help them flourish by identifying and expressing their unique
contribution to the world.
